About MeTRH
Meru Teaching & Referral Hopsital is a regional referral facility to the neighbouring counties of Tharaka Nithi, Marsabit and Isiolo. It also acts as a teaching institution for various medical colleges and universities in the country. The hospital currently stands on a 7.6 hectares piece of land. It serves a catchment area of Meru County with a population of about 1.4 million people. The hospital has a bed capacity of 360 beds, 22 cots and 9 incubators. The average daily outpatient attendance is about 1000 patients and daily bed occupancy rate of 150% translating to an average of 450 inpatients daily
It has a workforce of over 500 full-time employees. The hospital provides routine general medical services like outpatient services, accident and emergency, medical lab, maternity services, and x-ray/imaging services. It is the only public facility in the Upper Eastern region offering specialised services such as MRI Imaging, oncology/chemotherapy, laparoscopy/minimal access surgery, maxillofacial surgery among others. It also serves as the teaching hospital for medical learning institutions such as Kenya Methodist University, Meru University, and KMTC.
Growth and Development
New 250 Wards Block Under Construction
Over the years the MeTRH has transitioned from a dispensary to the current level five hospital having started by offering primary health but now offers specialised care.
Key achievements made by the hospital include:- MRI; CT scan; advanced laboratory tests including tumour markers/Gene-expert and pathology department; dialysis; oxygen plant; power back up using 1000KVA generators; NHIF wing of the hospital; Trauma ward: ambulatory services; special clinic including Oncology, Palliative Care services, maxillofacial ,ENT and improved mortuary services among others. The hospital collaborates with Institutions of higher learning for capacity development. There is improvement in medical supplies, employment of specialist, comprehensive rehabilitation services; cleft lip and palate camp, laparoscopy among others.
Transformation to Level 6 Status
Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital Board Chairman Prof. Jotham Micheni and MeTRH Director Dr. Joseph Wahome outline the changes that will be effected in all departments as the hospital transitions into a level six facility. The transition period will also facilitate a positive change in patient level of care and in delivery of specialized services.
Role of MeTRH
MeTRH recognises the critical role it has to play in the achievement of the national, regional and county agenda through provision of innovative patient-centred specialised care and training. It is an internship centre for MOH interns, clinical Officers, nurses, nutritionists and research. Our Strategic Plan has outlined the key initiatives geared towards achieving the Hospital’s Mission, Vision and core mandate.
